HOUSTON -- The mayor of Houston, the fourth largest U.S. city, has proclaimed September 25 as the day for celebrating the China National Day.

The proclamation was made ahead of an evening show scheduled for September 25 to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

"Houston has been enriched by the presence and contributions of its residents of Chinese ancestry, and is proud to be the recipient of their many significant contributions to the cultural, civic, economic and spiritual life of our city," mayor Annise Parker said in the proclamation letter.

On September 25, more than 60 organizations in the Greater Houston Chinese community will come together to co-host the evening show to celebration China National Day.

"About 700 business and community leaders, public officials and diplomats assemble together to celebrate Chinese culture, and to promote friendship and trade between the United States and China," the mayor said, voicing her hope that the evening show will be a "successful and rewarding event."

Ed Emmett, chief executive officer of Harris County, whose county seat is Houston, also has sent a letter to the organizers of the Sept. 25 evening show proclaiming the day as the China National Day celebration day.
