BEIJING -- A Chinese mainland spokeswoman on Wednesday called for more efforts from Taiwan to change discriminatory regulations affecting spouses and students from the mainland.

Fan Liqing, spokeswoman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks in response to a question at a weekly press conference.

"Under the peaceful development of relations across the Strait, Taiwan should make timely efforts to adjust and revise discriminatory regulations so as to provide a fair and positive environment for cross-Strait marriages and students from the mainland," Fan said.

For political purposes, some political parties in Taiwan have repeatedly blocked changes to discriminatory regulations, regardless of human rights and justice, Fan added.

Also at the conference, Fan reiterated that mainland tourists should visit Taiwan lawfully and the mainland bans mainland tourists from entering Taiwan via a third location.
