BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland's stance of never getting involved in elections in Taiwan remains clear and consistent, a mainland spokesman said Wednesday.

Yang Yi, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks in response to a question from the media during a press conference.

"What we are concerned with is that the basis for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations should not be undermined and its forward-moving development trend should not be weakened," Yang said.

He said the mainland hopes compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait will cherish the hard-earned situation featuring the development of cross-Strait relations, and work together to safeguard the peaceful development of relations.
