Chinese mainland offers help to Taiwan compatriots in quake-hit Japan

BEIJING, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland will offer assistance to Taiwan compatriots currently in quake-ravaged Japan, a mainland official said Wednesday.

Fan Liqing, spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, or the Cabinet, told a press conference that the mainland had paid close attention to the safety of Chinese in Japan, hit by a catastrophic earthquake and ensuing tsunami, causing damage to nuclear reactors.

China's embassy in Japan on Tuesday called for an orderly evacuation of Chinese nationals from affected areas.

"The Chinese mainland will make all-out efforts to help Taiwan compatriots in Japan, if they need any assistance," Fan said.

When asked whether the mainland and Taiwan were prepared to jointly combat possible nuclear leakages caused by the quake, Fan said "channels for cross-Strait exchanges in nuclear security have always been open."

She added that all units of the mainland nuclear power plants were currently safe.
