Zhang Mingqing:Taiwan Issue Must be Resolved under One-China Principle

The Taiwan issue cannot linger indefinitely and should be resolved under the one-China principle, Zhang Mingqing, spokesman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a routine press conference Wednesday.
President Jiang Zemin's report to the recently-concluded 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) proposed aguideline for dealing with the Taiwan issue, which stresses the principle of "one China", said Zhang.
Once that principle is fully respected, the two sides can discuss a variety of topics including ending their hostility, deciding Taiwan's appropriate status in the international community and determining the Taiwan authorities's political status, according to the report.
Zhang said these proposals show the mainland's positive attitude and sincerity toward achieving meaningful dialogue between the two sides.
The mainland's policy will remain consistent, the spokesman said, adding that so far there have been no personnel changes in the departments dealing with the Taiwan issue following the conclusion of the national CPC congress.
