Early this month Xiamen No. 1 Hospital and Taiwan Hongji Bioengineering Company Limited signed an agreement to set up a reproduction medical center. The center will conduct researches on the third-generation test-tube baby.

Based on the technology for the first two generations of the test-tube baby, the third-generation technology adopts new method to carefully select the healthy embryo before it is implanted into the mother's womb. In this way hereditary diseases will not be transferred from the parents to the child.

Presently test-tube baby technology is the most effective way to offer solution to sterility and ensure healthy birth.

So far only Guangzhou and Taiwan Province boast this technology.

The sterility department of Xiamen No. 1 Hospital received over 3,000 female patients each year. The reproduction medical center is expected to offer service not only to the patients in China but also those in Southeast Asia. The technical staff of Taiwan Hongji Bioengineering include outstanding experts from Taiwan and US specializing in reproduction medicine, among them there is the expert from Taiwan who practiced the first third-generation test-tube baby technology.
