The newest statistics from the economic department of Taiwan shows that, the total volume of trade across the straits exceeds US$40 billion last year, with Taiwan export to mainland up to US$32.8 billion, accounting for 25% of the total export value of Taiwan. Nowadays China mainland overcomes USA to become the largest export market of Taiwan.
In terms of investment, according to the data, Taiwan traders totally put an accumulative volume of US$ 25.5 billion in mainland, occupying 48.32% of the whole overseas investment of Taiwan and ranking first. Statistics from Taiwan relevant department also shows that, early since 1993, the favourable trade balance of Taiwan to mainland has surpassed that of Taiwan to other regions of the world. From 1991 to 2001, totally favourable trade balance of Taiwan to mainland amounts to US$162.7 billion, much more than the number of Taiwan foreign exchange reserves.
