  Some of the more common English words, with Chinese roots are ginseng (ren shen)silk(si)dimsum(dianxin),oolong(wulong),fengshui(fengshui),kow-tow(koutou),mah-jong(maque),typhon(taifeng),tao(dao),yin and yang(yin yang),Tai Chi(taiji),kung-fu(gong fu),Gung –and of course China (usually explained as derived from Qin,the dynasty which first unified China ).In most languages the word for tea is based on Cha-something similar to “de“.


 


  Many Chinese words came to English via Japanese so have Japanese pronunciations, including shogun (jiang jun) ,tofu(dou fu),rickshaw(ren li che)and even kanji(han zi).Other words are Japanese creations which use Chinese characters, such as Shinto (shen dao)judo(rou dao)ninja(ren zhe),and sushi(shou si)
