Exquisite Woodcarving and Textile Artistry
   日期:2003-06-25 15:35        编辑: system        来源:

The primary handcrafts of the Gao Shan nationality include textiles, bamboo weavings, woodcarvings, carvings, bamboo cuttings, and ceramic productions. Among the branches of the Gao Shan nationality, the woodcarvings of the Pai Wan People, the Lu Kai People and the Ya Mei People is considered exceptional. The skill of knife cutting is a famous traditional handcraft. Many various utensils full of national ethnic designs are produced with a knife. For example, some tools created using the knife include pestle for pounding rice, wooden storage containers, steam caskets for making cake and wine, goblets, spoons and even canoes.

Carvings are more prevalent in their daily life and include a variety of engravings such as round, relief, line, enchase and hollow. The tools also embody a variety of designs and patterns, such as characters, animals, and flowers. These are also found on musical instruments and other decorations. The artistry itself is exquisite with lively imagery produced on daily appliances such as pots, screens, engraving boards (a type of panel in the house), chairs, pillars, utensils and tobacco pipes. The engraved pillar in the Mourning Hall of Sacrifice for ancestors is also highly praised; the beams, eaves and paneling are carved in different colors.

The Gao Shan people have known how to spin the "Fan Cloth" using flax since early history. In the Tai Ya and Sai Xia clans, it is customary to determine one social status based on "physical skills for men and spinning quality for women." The spinning methods are basically the same; both clans use the vertical spinning axle and slub the line by hand before twining it on the axle. The loom itself belongs to the primal waist loom category whereby the two cloth clamping boards hand on the woman's waist. Within the Ai Mei, Ya Mei and Bi Nan clans, two wooden poles protruding from the ground are used as the loom. Instead of trampling the board, women sit on the ground or stool to carry out the spinning work. According to custom, men are prohibited from entering the house when women are spinning.

The textile products mainly include the white flax and the parallel line flax with the white and brown color interweaved. The braid and cross_stitch work are then made in the cloth in various decorations and patterns.
