Postponed for one year due to SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), the Third China International Piano Contest will be held at Zhongshan Park in Beijing on May 6-16.
Forty-nine contestants from 25 countries and regions will compete for the first prize -- US$20,000. Professor Zhou Guangren, a famous pianist and educator, will preside over the judging committee, whose members will comprise 10 famous piano educators and piano players.
Over the course of the contest, four members, including the president of the judging committee for the International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition, will launch a "masters' class " at the Central Conservatory of Music.
Initiated in 1994, the China International Piano Contest is held every four years. As an international contest, the event has become a "cultural name card" in China's foreign affairs. Award winners, such as Olga Kohn from Russia, and Li Yundi, Chen Sa and Qin Chuan from China, have all become rising stars in international piano circles.
As an added bonus, special awards have also been set up for "Excellence in Playing Chinese Piano Works" and "Excellence in Playing Chopin's Works," courtesy of the International Frederick Chopin Trust. |
