China has started a 17-year project to preserve the nation's unique folk arts, crafts, literature and traditions.
In a few years' time, people will be able to go to nearby centers and museums to help protect traditional folk culture, Wednesday's China Daily quoted Vice-Minister of Culture Zhou Heping as saying.
Chinese unique folk culture items are disappearing fast these years. For example, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region had 18 local operas half century ago, but only four of them are still alive today.
Influence from modern lifestyles and globalization as well as some young people's prejudice against folk culture are blamed by experts for the loss of traditional folk culture, the paper said.
China has established a national center last February to preserve the dying folk culture and legislation in this respect is also under way.
In addition, the central government has earmarked 20 million yuan (US$2.4 million) for this project this year, the paper said. |
