Germans don't need to travel all the way to China to see the famous terra-cotta army. Replicas of the real terra-cotta warriors will soon be exhibited in Berlin.
Some 130 terra-cotta warriors, each weighing 200 kilos, arrived at Berlin on March 5. Workers were busy in setting them up in their new temporary home at the former East German parliament building. For the exhibition, these duplicates of Emperor Qin Shi Huang's terra-cotta warriors were made some three years ago in a Chinese village near the original excavation site.
The original terra-cotta soldiers were discovered in the Chinese village of Xiyang in Shaanxi Province in 1974 when local farmers were digging a well.
The soldiers belonged to the burial site of China's first emperor and were found in the vicinity of his grave. Upon ascending the throne at the age of 13, Qin Shi Huang had work commenced on his mausoleum. It took 11 years to complete. It is speculated that many buried treasures and sacrificial objects were placed in the mausoleum to accompany the emperor in his after life.
The German organizers of the terra-cotta army exhibition took the initiative to have the duplicates made in China. Eight horses and some 1,000 smaller soldiers built to a scale of 1:10 are also part of the order.
Before the official opening on March 13, another 50 soldiers are expected to arrive in Berlin. |
