According to experts, the production value of China's cultural industry will reach 600 billion yuan (US$72 billion) in 2005. Zhang Xiaochong, director of the International Cooperation Center under the State Development Planning Commission and head of the organizing committee of China Culture Forum, is also optimistic about the prospect of China's cultural industry.
However, Zhang Xiaochong stressed that China's cultural industry still lags far behind that of western developed countries and the Chinese do not have enough awareness of the industry. As for the reason, he pointed out, "For a long time, China regards culture as an undertaking rather than an industry, so the government undertook all its planning, management and development."
Zhang added, at present, British cultural industry boasts an annual production value of 60 billion pounds, Japanese cultural industry generates a sales value of 11 trillion Japanese yens, and in the US, the production value accounts to 20% of its GDP, while in China most cultural enterprises are of small scale and have many management loopholes. Therefore, China should pay attention to the development in other countries and learn from them.
Initiated in 2002, China Culture Forum is held biannually. This year, Taiyuan in Shanxi Province will serve as the host city for the second forum from September 13 to 15, 2004. |
