Two works of Susan Sontag, a famous female critic of the United States who has criticized the US-launched Iraqi War publicly, were published together in China for the first time recently.
The Collected Works of Susan Sontag will include her most famous critical works of "AIDS and Its Metaphor" and "Against Interpretation and Other Essays", published as two volumes by the Shanghai Translation Publishing House (STPH). Some 15,000 copies of each volume will be published in the first printing.
The earliest edition of "AIDS and Its Metaphor" was published in 1978, and that of "Against Interpretation and Other Essays" was in 1966. Both are regarded as classics of Western critical works.
The translated edition of the STPH is based on the latest edition published in the United States in 1990 and 2001 respectively.
Born in New York in 1933, Susan Sontag is considered one of the most important female intellectuals in the West enjoying popularity equal to Simone de Beauvoir, who is famous for her work "The Second Sex".
Compared with other contemporary intellectuals in the West, Sontag knows more about China as her parents had been missionaries to China and she had visited twice in the 1970s.
Sontag plans to visit Beijing and Shanghai this May with Oe Kenzaburo, famous Japanese writer and winner of the Nobel literary prize in 1994. |
