The China Nan Yin (“South China Music”) Concert will be held near Paris in a few days as part of “The Essence of Ancient Music” an exhibition of ancient Chinese musical instruments at the Paris China Cultural Center.
Nan yin is reputed as the “live fossil of ancient Chinese music.” Records show that the history of music in South China can be traced back to the palatial music of the Tang Dynasty (618-907).
The concert is co-sponsored by the Paris-China Cultural Center and the Cultural Bureau of Xiamen Metropolis. The Xiamen South Music Troupe, which inherited the tradition of southern music, is very influential in Fujian Province, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and Southeast Asian regions. This will be the troupe’s first performing visit to Europe, where a great number of classics will be especially prepared for the audience.
Characterized by its elegant and royal flavor, the performance is highly acclaimed by all the French audiences. According to one audience member: “The South Music is hard to understand, but it maintains the features of ancient music. … Chinese music deserves its name as a gem in the world culture.” |
