The Shanghai Museum is one of the largest museums in China, famous for its Chinese art collections, totaling up to about 120,000 pieces. Its abundant collections have a world reputation for its fine quality, specially the master pieces of Bronzes, Ceramics, Calligraphy and Chinese Paintings collection.

The Shanghai Museum was founded by the Municipal Council in 1952. Its original site was a former racing park, located at No. 325, West Nanjing Street. In 1959, the Museum moved to ZhongHui Tower along South Henan Street.

The Museum undergoes a long history of development to make up its present scale and huge collections. In 1992, the Shanghai Municipal Council offered a new site at the People's Square, the very central area of City, for the expanding project of the Museum. Constructions began in August 1993 for a brand new museum building. The new museum building what we can see now opened in October 12, 1996.

It's a traditional style structure with vault ceiling and square base resulted in a very impressive visual effect, and a harmony combination of Chinese heritage and achievement of modern Chinese development, very unique among world's museums.

The Museum has 3 exhibition halls and 10 gallery devoted to various collections. For recent years, visitors come here accounting for a record high. The Museum now serves a landmark of the Municipal.
