PFP's Soong-Lin pass public endorsement threshold

  <p>TAIPEI -- Taiwan's People First Party (PFP) chairman James Soong and his running mate Lin Ruey-shiung have received over 400,000 eligible public endorsement signatures for their bid to run in the upcoming Taiwan leader election, the local election commission announced Tuesday.</p>
<p>Soong and Lin as a pair received 445,864 eligible endorsements, surpassing the minimum requirement of 257,695 and therefore will be given an eligibility certificate, the local election commission said.</p>
<p>The local election commission has checked the submitted endorsement signatures of more than 460,000 and found 445,864 eligible.</p>
<p>The Soong campaign said Soong and Lin will register their candidacy for the election next week.</p>
<p>Taiwan's leader election will be held on Jan. 14, 2012. Ma Ying-jeou and his running mate Wu Den-yih are the candidates from the ruling Kuomintang Party, while Tsai Ing-wen and her running mate Su Jia-chyuan are the candidates from Taiwan's major opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).</p>
