China and Italy have made notable achievements in their cooperation on environmental protection since the joint statement on the issue was signed by their governments three years ago.
Luo Gaolai, a senior official in charge of foreign economic cooperation in the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), said Wednesday that 16 joint environmental projects were underway or planned.
Those projects, in the fields of sustainable agriculture, air quality monitoring and traffic pollution, involved aspects of the Kyoto Protocol and other international environmental protection agreements.
"The smooth and fruitful cooperation indicates that China and Italy have forged a model of bilateral cooperation on environmental protection," Luo said.
The cooperation between Chinese and Italian enterprises also played an essential role in environmental improvement with projects in Taiyuan city in north China's Shanxi Province, and eastern Shanghai municipality and Suzhou city to reduce pollution from boilers and buses.
"This kind of cooperation advances the cause of the Chinese environmental protection to be market-oriented," Luo said.
Antonino Laspina, Italian Trade Commissioner to China, said that Italy and China shared a long-term friendly cooperative relationship.
The Italian government and firms had great expectations of participating in China's environmental protection projects, he noted.
The number of Chinese enterprises involving environmental protection increased from more than 9,000 in 1999 to over 20,000 in 2003, said Su Fan, international department deputy director of the China Association of Environmental Protection Industry.
"Most are small and medium-sized enterprises and cooperation with foreign partners helps improve efficiency," Su said. |
