China and the European Union are to set up a dialogue mechanism allowing both sides to coordinate efforts in global environmental issues. A document to set up the mechanism was signed between China's Minister of Environmental Protection Xie Zhenhua and visiting EU Commissioner for the Environment Margot Wallstrom on Wednesday. It is the first time a EU environment commissioner has visited China.
The establishment of such coordination mechanism between China and the EU is a priority for both sides that was confirmed during the recent EU-China Summit. Such a structured dialogue will allow both parties to coordinate efforts in issues including bio-diversity conservation, climate change, and ozone layer protection. It will also provide a forum for China and the EU to share experience in dealing with similar challenges.
China and the EU already enjoy active cooperation in the field of environmental protection. The European Union has earmarked 55 million euros for projects in China, the largest of which was launched in northeastern China's Liaoning Province.
The project involves 37 million euros from the EU and 11.5 million euros from China over a five year period. It aims to help the heavily industrialized province to restructure its environmental planning and management, and covers such areas as waste water management and clean production. The province was also the first stop for Ms. Walstrom's visit, before coming to Beijing.
During her stay in the capital, Ms. Walstrom will also visit a "Green School" and give a speech on European environment policy.
Protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development is one of the three key areas of cooperation between China and the EU. Margot Walstrom's visit is part of the process to further this cooperation, as both sides feel strongly about their duties to address global environmental challenges.
