Nan'ao County in south China's Guangdong Province has set up land and marine reserves on and around 34 uninhabited islands.
As the only island county in Guangdong, Nan'ao, east of Shantou City, has 35 uninhabited islands each with an area larger than 500 square meters. These islands spread over 4,600 square kilometers in the South China Sea.
The county put the islands, including the Lemen Islands and the Nanpeng Islands, into the categories of marine life protection area, marine breeding area and deep-sea mollusk breeding area.
The uninhabited islands in Nan'ao County boast 1,300 species ofsea creatures and host more than 40 land animal species which are under state protection. Six islands have become homes to thousands of birds.
China has more than 6,000 islands each with an area larger than 500 square meters, of which 94 percent are uninhabited. |
