Deep Environmental Drilling in Xinjiang
   日期:2003-10-13 17:05        编辑: system        来源:

In RuoQiang County in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, a drill pipe was hammered into the earth near the center of the Luobupo area on Friday. It's the first time that Chinese scientists have carried out deep environmental drilling in this area.
Scientists hope to be able to take an 800-meter core sample after one month of drilling. Luobupo was once the largest lake in the drought area in Northwest China but it became dry in 1972. With its 2400-meter-deep deposition, Luobupo is now a geological archive, preserving a detailed recording of the region's ecological and climatic changes over 40 million years.
Scientists will also carry out two 150-meter drillings in the same area. Analyses of these core samples will help them to establish why and how the area became dry, and relate this information to the drought in the western areas. Scientists also hope that the drilling will provide scientific data for environmental improvement and resource development in the area.
