Ministry of Health Press Release (May 6) on SARS

The Press Office under the Ministry of Health published Tuesday afternoon a press release on the latest SARS situation on the Chinese mainland. On May 6, 14 provinces reported new SARS cases, of which, 8 provinces reported both new cases and new suspected cases, 2 provinces reported new cases and 4 provinces reported new suspected cases, and the remaining 17 provinces reported no cases.


By 10:00 am May 6, 25 provinces have reported SARS cases. So far, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Qinghai provinces and Tibet Autonomous Region have not found any cases. Xinjiang ruled out its one remaining suspected case. Of the provinces having reported suspected or confirmed SARS cases, Heilongjiang still reports no diagnosed case; Fujian Province has had no reported case for 28 days while Shandong Province has reported no new case for 12 days. What's more, Liaoning, Zhejiang and Hunan provinces have reported no new cases for 15 successive days since April 21.


From 10:00 am May 5 to 10:00 am May 6, China reported 138 new cases, 27 patients recovered and 8 deaths. Of the 138 cases, 77 were suspected cases and now confirmed as SARS patients.


Of these figures:


Beijing reported 70 new cases (of which 37 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 13 patients recovered and 4 deaths


Tianjin reported 11 new cases (of which 6 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients)


Hebei reported 6 new cases (of which 2 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients) and 2 patients recovered


Shanxi reported 11 new cases (of which 5 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 5 recovered and 3 deaths


Inner Mongolia reported 21 new cases (of which 18 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients)


Jilin reported 2 new cases (all of which were suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients)


Shanghai reported 2 new cases (all of which were suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients)


Hubei reported 2 new cases (of which 1 was suspected but now confirmed as a SARS patient)


Guangdong reported 12 new cases (of which 4 were used to be suspected but now are confirmed SARS patients), 6 patients recovered and 1 death


Guangxi reported 1 patient recovered


Gansu reported 1 new case.
