BEIJING,June 25 -- A long spell of heavy rain and floods has caused huge losses for hundreds of Taiwan-funded companies in some southern provinces, Fan Liqing, spokeswoman of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, told a press conference on Wednesday.

Fan said that 398 Taiwan-funded firms in Guangdong Province had lost almost 446 million yuan ($64.6 million) because of the floods. In Hunan Province, Taiwan companies had lost about 60 million yuan.

So far, there were no reports of deaths or injuries among the staff of these firms, according to Fan.

Local authorities have offered timely and sufficient assistance to the Taiwan-funded factories and even organized donation drives for them, she said.

Fan also explained policies regarding Taiwan investors in the mainland. The mainland plans to build export-oriented processing zones in 50 western and central cities.

Mainland authorities have devoted much attention to improving the environment for Taiwan investors and soliciting feedback from them, she said.
