BEIJING, May 14 -- The Chinese mainland hopes authorities across the Taiwan Strait can make joint efforts to "create a new situation" of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations after the inauguration of Taiwan's incoming leader Ma Ying-jeou on May 20, a mainland spokesman said here Wednesday.

"We have noticed that since Mr. Ma Ying-jeou was elected on March 22, he has expressed several times that he will keep his words on developing cross-Strait relations," Yang Yi, spokesman of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said at a press conference.

"The peaceful development of cross-Strait relations is a common aspiration and interest of compatriots on both sides," he said.

With a view to the "positive changes" in the Taiwan situation, the mainland hoped the two sides could "build mutual trust, lay aside disputes, seek consensus and shelve differences, and create a win-win situation", he said.

Yang also called for joint efforts between the two sides to realize the weekend cross-Strait charter flights and the opening of the island to mainland residents for sightseeing tour as soon as possible.

According to Yang, the Chinese mainland has given licenses to two more companies in addition to the existing seven companies to transport sand to Taiwan.
