Analysts expect "nothing much new" from Kerry's Middle East tour

JERUSALEM -- The United States Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Israel on Thursday as part of his efforts to restart the peace process, but analysts expect "nothing much new" from his tour and caution the public to lower expectations.

It is Kerry's fourth visit to Israel since assuming his post in January. In addition to visiting Israel and Palestinian National Authority (PNA), Kerry also met with Jordanian and Turkish leaders, as well as hosted a delegation of foreign ministers from the Arab League, all with the purpose of getting negotiations started again.

Many analysts, however, cautioned the public to lower their expectations. Prof. Mohammed Dajani, of the Al-Quds University in East Jerusalem, said that "it's better not to be very optimistic, so that if anything happens it will be good news."

"The Palestinians have seen so many times these types of visits, and there is not so much new. So, there is a feeling of frustration and despair among Palestinians," Dajani said.

One of the most complicated issues that Kerry needs to find a way around is Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' insistence on returning to the negotiation table after Israel reinstates the settlement freeze, a demand that Israel has rejected.

If Abbas were to backtrack on his demand, it would mean a severe drop support for him. But Dajani argued that "if dealt diplomatically well" then there is a chance that Abbas could drop his precondition.

Brigadier General (reserve) Mike Herzog, an International Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and veteran of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, told Xinhua that Kerry's approach is a "comprehensive" one that deals with several aspects of the problem simultaneously.

Kerry's approach, as Herzog noted, includes four elements: setting a timeframe; boosting the Palestinian economy both directly and through long-term projects; providing a regional supportive environment; and working behind the scenes.
