KATHMANDU-- Life remained at a standstill in 20 districts of Nepal's plains due to a strike called on Sunday by Nepal Sadhbhawana Party demanding the announcement of a date for Constituent Assembly(CA) election, police said.
"We called a strike after the government did not listen to our demands that we raised through peaceful means," party spokesperson Manish Suman told Xinhua. He said that some party members had been injured when police intervened in their protests in different districts.
Though major parties agree to hold election in November for the constituent assembly members, no date has been fixed as the government and political parties have not settled some issues related to electoral laws.
Earlier, the party's Chairman Rajendra Mahato started a fast- onto-death in Kathmandu, demanding announcement of a date for the election. Police on May 24 broke Mahato's fast-unto-death and took him to hospital, which angered his party members.
The party, angered by police intervention, called the strike to press the government to fix a date for the elections. The party officials in the districts of southern plains vandalized and torched vehicles.
Local police said they had arrested some people involved in enforcing the strike. "We will continue to protest in the southern part of Nepal until the government declares election date," Suman told Xinhua.
After the CA elected in 2008 dissolved in 2012 without delivering a new constitution, Nepal is struggling to hold next CA election for the same purpose. |
