BEIRUT -- The number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon has reached 474,000, the latest report of UN Higher Council for Refugees showed on Monday.
Up to 379,000 refugees have been registered with the agency, while over 95,000 are waiting for their registration process to be completed.
There are currently 149,000 Syrian refugees in northern Lebanon, 133,000 in the Bekaa region, 58,000 in Beirut and Mount Lebanon, and 38,000 in southern Lebanon, according to the report.
Some 4,000 Syrian refugees arrived in Lebanon last week. Most of them were fleeing the intensified violence in the Syrian cities of Daraa and Aleppo.
Lebanon, facing increasing pressure due to the influx of Syrian refugees, has called for more international financial aid.
UN Higher Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres has said that the number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon has surpassed 10 percent of Lebanon's population and it is causing a huge burden for the Lebanese government and people. |
